The Seven Sleepers were seven young men from Ephesus who hid from the persecution of the Christians of Emperor Decius in a cave on Mount Ohlon. Upon learning of this, the ruler ordered that the entrance to the cave be covered with stone, so that the young men were sealed alive. But God endowed them with a mystical dream and kept them incorruptible and unchanging for two centuries until they were awakened to His glory and as a testimony that His words of resurrection were true. The miraculous awakening of the boys who had fallen asleep during Decius’ persecution took place during the reign of Theodosius the Younger. The king himself arrived alone in Ephesus with many believers and worshiped the holy boys.
After a long conversation with him, they slept their eternal sleep until the universal resurrection. Theodosius ordered seven silver coffins to be made and the bodies of the Sleepers to be placed in them. That night, however, they appeared to him in a dream and asked him to let them rest in the cave, as they had rested before. The boys’ cave has long been on display near Ephesus, on the slopes of Mount Prion. The fate of the holy relics of the seven sleeping children is unknown after the twelfth century, at the beginning of which Abbot Daniel saw them in the cave.
In Islam, the story of the Seven Sleeping Children called Ashab al-Kahf (People of the Cave) is mentioned in the Qur’an in Surah “The Cave”:
- They will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog – guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muhammad], “My Lord is most knowing of their number. None knows them except a few.
- And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine.
